In its earliest incarnation Fuengirola was known as Suel, and the town has its origins in Phoenician, Roman and Arab civilisations.  Today it is a well-developed modern urban municipality with numerous high-rise blocks of apartments, mainly near the seafront.

Fuengirola has more than eight kilometres of broad beaches along a promenade extending east and west from the town.  With a population of 80,000, it offers all the facilities to be expected of a major tourist centre: hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, discothèques, sports clubs and a yacht harbour.  Considerable commercial development has taken place in recent years, including construction of Parque Miramar, one of the largest shopping and leisure centres on the Costa del Sol.  Fuengirola offers much more than just sun, sea and sand.  When you become tired of lazing around on the beach and want to add a little culture or amusement, or a thrill, to your holiday Fuengirola has many attractions including concerts, ballet and flamenco shows, hosted in the renovated Sohail castle.
